Florida Regional Training – Martin County Health Department

We Can!® (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is a fast-growing national movement of families and communities coming together to promote healthy weight in children ages 8 through 13 through improved food choices, increased physical activity, and reduced screen time. 

 

Participants in this two-day training will learn:

  • How people like you have successfully implemented the We Can! program throughout the United States.
  • How to present 2 of 3 youth programs:
    • CATCH Kids Club (Coordinated Approach to Child Health)
      • Afterschool program for elementary school age children
    • S.M.A.R.T. (Student Media Awareness to Reduce Television)
      • In-school program for 3rd and 4th grade children
    • Media-Smart Youth: Eat, Think, Be Active!®
      • Afterschool program for young people ages 11 to 13
  • How to present the We Can! Energize Our Families parent program
  • How you can partner with media and others in your community.

Who should attend: 

This training opportunity is primarily intended for those who will return to their communities and implement the programs with 8- to 13-year-old youth.  Those whose role is more administrative and do not provide direct service may attend and are asked to bring at least one person who provides direct service to 8- through 13-year-olds.  Individuals who work or volunteer with afterschool programs, schools, PTAs, 4-H clubs, other youth-serving organizations, public health programs, nutrition education programs, hospitals/health care systems, faith-based organizations, work-site wellness programs, and park and recreation departments are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone else who wants to actively help prevent childhood obesity.  The training is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of whether you plan to present the programs in-state or out-of-state. 

CPEU – This program has been approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration for 10.5 CPEUs.

CEU – This program has been approved by the Florida Recreation and Park Association for 10.0 contact hours.

CEU – Approved by the Florida Board of Nursing, 11.0 nursing contact hours available from Martin Memorial Health Systems, Provider #NCE2816/CE Broker #50-1263.

If you are not able to attend the Florida Regional Training, please consider registering for any of the regional trainings throughout the year.

Travel Information:

Directions to the Chastain Campus

From I-95: Take Exit 101 (old 61) and follow Route 76 (Kanner Highway) north/east.  Make a right onto Salerno Road. Follow Salerno Road for approximately 2 miles and the Chastain Campus is on the right.

From the Florida Turnpike: Exit at Palm City.  Make a right onto Martin Highway (714).  At next light, make a right onto 713 to I-95 South.  Take Exit 101 (old 61) and follow instructions "From I-95" above.

Clare & Gladys Wolf High-Technology Center & Parking: Once you pass Martin Memorial Hospital (on the right), make a right turn into the Morgade Library entrance and a left into the Chastain Campus parking lot. 

The We Can! Regional Training will be held in the Clare and Gladys Wolf High-Technology Center (Building C) in the Susan H. Johnson Auditorium.  It is a red and beige brick two-story building on the west end of the campus with rounded aqua-colored glass windows. The room is on the right when you come in through the west entrance.

If approaching from US1 heading west on Salerno Road, the campus is on the left before the library.
