We Can!® (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is a fast-growing national movement of families and communities coming together to promote healthy weight in children ages 8 through 13 through improved food choices, increased physical activity, and reduced screen time.

Participants in this two-day training will learn:
  • How people like you can successfully implement the We Can! program, as well as take advantage of the experiences gained from numerous settings in the Pittsburgh area and throughout the United States.
  • How to present 2 of 3 youth programs:
    • CATCH Kids Club (Coordinated Approach to Child Health)
      • Afterschool program for elementary school age children
    • S.M.A.R.T. (Student Media Awareness to Reduce Television)
      • In-school program for 3rd and 4th grade children
    • Media-Smart Youth: Eat, Think, Be Active!®
      • Afterschool program for young people ages 11 to 13
  • How to present We Can! Energize Our Families parent program
  • How you can partner with media and others in your community
 Who should attend:

This training opportunity is primarily intended for those who will return to their communities and implement the programs with 8- to 13-year-old youth. Those whose role is more administrative and do not provide direct service may attend and are asked to bring at least one person who provides direct service to 8- through 13-year-olds.  Individuals who work or volunteer with afterschool programs, schools, PTAs, 4-H clubs, other youth-serving organizations, public health programs, nutrition education programs, hospitals/health care systems, faith-based organizations, work-site wellness programs, and park and recreation departments are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone else who wants to actively help prevent childhood obesity.  The training is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of whether you plan to present the programs in-state or out-of-state.

Health care professionals will be eligible for 0.9 continuing education units (CEUs) which equate to 9.75 contact hours, pending approval. This training meets the requirements for Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing reaccreditation. It is the responsibility of the attendees to verify the specific requirements for their specialty.

Dress comfortably! There will be opportunities for you to have fun and be physically active!
